The Daily Deal Market in Ireland Worth €2.1 Million in June – a 67% increase from May

Daily Deal Site Market Share in Ireland

June saw over €2.1 million spent in Ireland on the various Daily Deal sites such as CityDeal, Livingsocial and GrabOne, an increase of 67% on a month earlier. So says Shane Hayes, CEO of the leading Irish Daily Deal aggregation service, Siftie, “There were over 80,000 Individual deals bought in June up from 63,000 in May representing a 25% increase,” he continues. “The average price paid per deal increased from just under €20 to over €26”.

Siftie (www.sift.ie) provides a free service to its users who receive just ONE “sifted” email that summarises only the deals a subscriber is interested in. They maintain a database of all Daily Deals offered in Ireland and the UK.

June also saw the first full month of activity by GrabOne, the newcomer from the INM (Independent News & Media stable) and it would seem that a rising tide does indeed lift all boats – or at least the entry of a traditional media behemoth has had the effect of boosting sales across the board. GrabOne’s performance was nothing short of incredible. They sold €93K worth of vouchers in the month from a standing start to give them around 4% of the market and put them in fifth position.

The other big beneficiaries in the month were CityDeal (Groupon) and Livingsocial. CityDeal pushed through the €1 Million in revenue mark and maintained their market share at just under 50%. Livingsocial had a great month also increasing its sales to €440K which gives it 21% of the market. Launching in Galway as well as launching family friendly deals in Dublin seems to have worked some magic for Livingsocial.

Two other Irish competitors, PigsBack and BoardsDeals maintained their positions ahead of GrabOne in third and fourth position respectively. It will be interesting to see if the marketing muscle of the Independent Group can push GrabOne past these companies over the next few months.

Dealrush, another local player saw a 140% increase in revenues but it was still behind GrabOne in sixth. RateMyArea also performed creditably.

Ireland also saw a number of new Daily Deal sites over the last two months including SmartSearch who focus on Galway at the moment, Grouple who are part of TopFlight and naturally enough focus on travel, TodayFM Deals of radio station fame and EasonOffers who are powered by Gruupy. Eason Offers is similar to Gruupy and different from most other players in that they do physical fulfilment. That is, they send you something in the post when you buy, rather than sending you a voucher by email that you redeem at a merchant.

The entry of TodayFM, part of Denis O’Brien’s CommuniCorp is interesting. Does it presage entry into the space by the remainder of the other large Traditional Media players in Ireland such as the RTE, The Irish Times and Thomas Crosby Holdings (owners of the Examiner and the Sunday Business Post). It will be interesting to see how successful TodayFM Deals is, as, unlike the Independent with GrabOne, they cannot draw on the expertise of a sister company to kick-start their operation.

GrabOne is a joint venture between Independent News and Media and its Australian Division APN. GrabOne was one of the first Groupon clones to get going in Australia and New Zealand and has been very successful.
